Director Rahul Dholakia’s film Parzania draws from the real life tragedy of a Parsi couple who lost their son during the Gujarat riots

Film: Parzania

Cast: Naseeruddin Shah, Sarika, Raj Zutshi, Corin Nemec, Parzan Dastur, Pearl Barsiwala

Director: This is Los Angeles-based Rahul Dholakia’s second directorial venture after the romantic ‘Kehta Hai Dil Baar Baar.’

Plot: Film projectionist Cyrus and his wife Shernaz with their two kids—10-year-old son Parzan and eight-year-old daughter Dilshad—are happy in their little world. But this world comes crashing down, when Parzan is lost in the frenzy of riots.

Real to reel

The film tells the true-life tale of Rahul’s friends (a Parsi couple) in Ahmedabad who lost their son in the Gujarat riots (2002). The family still has hopes of finding the child, who disappeared one not so fine day.

Director speak: Rahul says, “What happened in Godhra was wrong but what happened in Ahmedabad was also wrong. Killing each other because of religion, creed or colour just doesn’t agree with me. More importantly, I am a Hindu and a Gujarati. If I don’t say something at this stage then I am as guilty as the people who have done it.”

Funds: Rahul informs, “Funding this kind of film was absolutely unimaginable. The Hindus would not fund this film. The Muslims wanted to fund it but I didn’t want it. It would then be a propaganda film and that’s what I am fighting against. I’m answerable not just to myself but also to the family whose story it is and to the communities on both the sides.”

Passionately compassionate:

Most of the actors waived off their remuneration, including maestro Zakir Husain who has composed the background score.

Award winning?

Rahul Dholakia (best director) and Sarika’s (best actress) names have been floating around as strong contenders for the National Awards.
