Iran-Dam-Protest
A number of southern tribesmen and three members of Iran’s Majlis protested against filling of a dam in Fars province, arguing that it would damage historical monuments in the region.

A group of 200 tribesmen and women from Fars province gathered in front of the Majlis building this morning in downtown Tehran protesting against filling of the Sivand Dam in northern part of Fars province, southern Iran.

The 57-meter-high dam is located 100 km north of the city of Shiraz near the historical site of Pasargad Plains.

The dam is scheduled to begin its operation in the coming spring.

Some experts said that the dam filling would submerge the archaeological treasures of Pasargad Plains and will ultimately ruin the Tomb of Cyrus the Great, the seat of the Achaemenid kings of the Ancient Persian Empire.

Calling on the government to stop the construction operation of the dam, the experts said the lake created after its water filling would cover the whole area of “Bolaghi Gorge” and the west of Pasargad Plains that hold prehistoric and historical sites which are at least 3000 years old.

By the unstable nature of the soil in the area, the water would soon travel the nine kilometer distance to the tomb of Cyrus the Great, the first human being who declared the universal Human Rights, and will ruin it, the experts said.

They believe that humidity created by the lake in this arid area even destabilize the soil and bring a lot of harmful vegetation at the site of Persepolis palaces too.

Meanwhile, three MPs from Tehran, Ilam and Marvdasht, have sent written notes to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the minister of energy calling for the halt to the dam filling which is due to begin next spring.

One of the three MPs, representative of Iranian Zoroastrians in Majlis, Koroush Niknaam said in his note to the president and the minister that he has called for a halt to the dam filling as a move to “protect the historical heritage of Pasargad.”
